Changeling

I look into the mirror and the only one I see,
Is the presence of my lover, and a face that’s haunting me,
The one I gave up life for, the one I thought so fair,
The one I never realized hid a promise of despair.

What started as a dream, from the tedium of life,
Quickly turned to sorrow cutting deeper than a knife,
For little did I know that the visions haunting me,
Were a precursor of the void to come, and stark calamity!

For you said,
“I am the blackness in your head,
The echo in your mind,
Temptation sweet, in pitch black night,
The whisper from behind.”

In accepting your temptation, little did I know,
The route that it would take me, nor the things that it would show,
You balanced, oh so skillfully, the falsehood and the true,
While blessing me with favors, extended to so few.

I stand upon the fulcrum of the direction I must take,
Looking back and forth, which of the choices shall I make?
Knowing without doubt, that I will have to choose,
Knowing without doubt, the cost of what I’d lose.

For you said,
“I came to say hello, while life kisses you goodbye,
On this auspicious day, when your beliefs will fade and die,
I came to say goodbye, while yet others say hello,
To a welcoming existence, hidden skillfully below.”

I pulled away, so shocked at first, as I tried to face the pain,
Only to respond once more, and return to you again,
Your lips that taste like honey, translucent skin so fair,
Teeth so keen like razors, but I didn’t really care.

Eyes that were so welcoming, now cast a smoldering gaze,
As I crumble to the floor, and perceptions shift in haze,
A coldness spreads the numbness, my bleeding just for you,
Deceived again by promises, which were so rarely true.

For you said,
“Have no fear, fragile thing, I will catch you when you fall,
For soon the hour will come, when I’m no threat to you at all,
Close your eyes, earthly child, I will guide you to my home,
And the sweet release of rapture, sealed by blood and bone.”

For a while I wished so desperately for the past not to exist,
The burning screamed right through me, impossible to resist,
Willingly I came, to drink the power of your life,
Submitting to the change, bought with blood and sacrifice.

Reality is harsh, the truth painful to behold,
Better that I should die, than exist as one so cold?
For it wasn’t as you said, but then, however could I see,
When all you really wanted was the prize inside of me?

For you said,
“Come now, don’t taunt yourself you fragile former man,
Become the lion that you are, and leave behind the lamb,
For those who are so temporary, exist to serve our kind,
Relax now, and drink now, and leave insignificance behind.”

I find a grave behind us, that reminds me so of you,
And of the things I suffered, of the nightmare ringing true,
The travesty of majesty, and oaths, unholy made,
Rejection from the sunlight, eternity in shade.

Humanity now lost as I turn toward new kin,
Everything so dark, former memories so dim,
I cross the Crystal Ocean, become a living un-dead force,
And you were waiting for me, for you knew I’d come – of course.

Everything so stark and sharp, within my vaulted mind,
Clarity of existence, under moon with my new kind,
Frozen now in time and space, an elite fraternity,
Savoring the sage delights, of all eternity.

For we say,
“High now, come fly now, the mortal world below,
Gaze again at vast expanse, of where we no longer go,
See there on horizon, a fresh chapter to our story,
A new world lies ahead, in moonlit radiant glory.”

And I say,
“In darkness now, I’ll spend my years, in blissful indolence,
Taking what I want, and when, without fear of consequence,
The world is mine, and you are mine, I felt this at my core,
From the moment that I met you, I knew...it was for evermore!”
